What's day-to-day life like at a dog kennel for pets who's owners have gone on vacation? ?

When I was a kid, I remember we took our dog to a kennel because we were going on a summer vacation where dogs weren't allowed. The place looked really nice and had a huge backyard where we were told the dogs stayed most of the day running around and playing together.

However, when we picked up our dog, he was in a cage in the basement of the kennel laying on a hard cement floor with no kind of bedding and for some reason his furr was wet.

When I picked him up to take him home, he was shivering and clinging tto me.

Now I'm an adult with a nine month old Golden Retriever Mix that we were forced to take the kennel for a family vacation. I'm wondering what it's like there for our dog. Do they take them out for 30 minutes a day, then leave them in the cage the rest of the time? Do the people play with them periodically and brush them during the day?

They made it seem really great on the brochure, but I'm wondering what the truth is?

  1. We leave our dog in kennels, always go with the experience of someone else who left their dog there before.  All kennels are different,  we have had some good experiences and bad ones, until a friend recommended one to us, have not looked back since. Two walks per day and kennels heated and when you return they have a full update on paper on how your dog was in while in their care. Dont belive what add says, just take my advice and go with a recommodation from someone else. After all, the poor animal can never tell us whats really going on so we have too look out for them. Dont we?

  2. That completely depends on the boarding facility unless you give us the exact place they are going to be staying there is no way to say, as no two places are alike, some are godawful places while others pamper your pets. The facility you chose should be well researched beforehand.

ETA: Sorry I have never boarded dogs before in The Bahamas the only boarding facility is the vet and I do not trust the vets here (maybe in the us i would) to watch my dogs properly.

You might try using google to look for boarding reviews in your area

  3. It seems like it would be not that good of a kennel because good kennels take them out, bathe them, play with other dogs, and brush there coats. So, i would next time you go on a vacation, I would ask to see were he will be sleeping and playing just to make sure.  In conclusion always ask because sometimes there's weird disease or sickness in the kennels.

  4. its the same like whne your parents would leave you at a daycare when you were younger, you have other people to play with, you can interact, go potty, and have snack time, its the same thing. you should ask the kennel all those questions.

  5. One day I used a local boarding facility and found my dog  shivering, wet and on a concrete floor she did not go back there. the most important thing is to research and ask question. I found this boarding facility to be great. Its a bit pricey but I did it anyways they have several a la carte features like scheduled playtime  one-on-one or with othwr dogs, baths, massage etc

Again do your research  Good luck
