Aside from a bigger seat and more legroom, what can I expect in first class on a TGV Est (Paris-Strasbourg) train? Complimentary beverages, etc?

  1. Wow I am jealous, they will open this line in June 07!!! And you are getting to travel on it.

Using TGV is a great experience, in first class nonetheless...

The cars have been designed by Christian Lacroix, a famous French couturier.

Expect room, comfort, meeting nice and interesting people and I guess the food will be an upgrade from what the SNCF used to have in their regular Corail Train on this line, I wouldn't hold my breath though and expect a first class meal.

Enjoy your trip and the scenery, you will cross Champagne, Lorraine and Alsace.

  2. No perks other than some comfortable seating as though on a fine dining restaurant but just facing an individual, another passenger.  There are also seats like those in regular trains, facing one direction.   But you have to pay for your food and drinks if you order any.

  3. all of the above... it's very comfortable, plus they cook your food to order!

  4. Not every TGV is the same in that regard.

I have travelled in first class last Summer thanks to a special offer that the SNCF did (first class at 5€ more than second class) and took trains that did not offer exactly the same service.

There are also different areas within the first class coaches. In some, there are areas called "club" where groups of 4 seats are isolated from the rest of the coach in small "rooms".

There are also different TGVs as some are "duplex" (two levels)

I think the most modern trains have better equipment than the older ones. The one I took to Nantes did not have plugs for instance. And I have yet to find one that offers Wifi internet connexion. It was supposed to be available on the Thalys, but I was not able to find it (and anyway I travelled in second class that time).

  5. It's quieter, there are plugs for computers, desk lamps, and more privacy.
