What's going on with my 10 week old's belly button?

Hello,

I have this picture

My daughter is 10 weeks old now, and her belly button is still oozing and crusty. I'm wondering if that is a hernia? It's wet and very internal organ like, and protrudes when she uses her stomach muscles... It can be pushed back in, but just comes right back out when she uses her muscles.

Is this normal? Anyone else had something simliar with their child? Any suggestions on what this could be would be awesome. Thanks :)

  1. yes that is a hernia, but what does the doctor say? usually when it is exposed they do the surgery for it to prevent an infection

  2. No, it's not normal. Call an ambulance immediately....

  3. It could be a hernia or an umbilical granuloma. My son had the latter and it was treated by the doctor with silver nitrate. Either way she'll need to be taken to the doctor to get a correct diagnosis.

  4. My son had the same problem...it is a mild hernia that babies normally get.  My son's doctor told me that it will go away on it's own, but if it doesn't go away by the time he turns one...then he would have to have surgery to correct it. My son is 3 months now and his belly button is completely healed.

  5. It looks like it could either be a hernia or the cord hasn't healed totally yet.  By 10 weeks, the cord should have healed weeks ago.  Either way, you need to take her to the doctor and have it looked at very soon.

  6. hmm that is strange.  I would def. consult your pediatrician. I have never seen anything like that before. My sons stayed on for awhile, and bled a little bit, but I was told to put some rubbing alcohol on it with a q tip to help dry it up.  I am sorry I can't be of more help lol.  Good Luck!
