What's good about solar panels?

How do they help the environment. What's their purpose?

Your energy will be free, last as long as the sun does, and it is non polluting, minus what it takes to create the panel. It replaces the need to use coal for energy which is dirty and running out and run by people who have a monopoly on the energy industry.

I saw on the History Channel that a farm of solar panels 100 square miles in the middle of Nevada could provide the energy needs of the entire USA. If the oil and coal indusrty didn't have such a tight leash on us, we might be able to have something like this in the near future. How cool would that be!

It is simple solar panels are a clean and free font of energy nothing is beter don´t produce CO2 and are pretty

In general, they capture energy for your home (or office etc.) that has no further environmental impact (e.g. carbon) or cost.

There are two kinds of solar panel:

1) Water heating, to provide both hot water and central heating, is the main one. In the UK and similar climates, there isn't enough solar energy for this to be your only source of hot water and heating. But there is enough to make a big impact, and you use another heating method (usually a boiler) to top-up the already hot water. There are two main kinds: panels and evacuated tubes; the environmental impact is similar for both, so the choice is more about your specific location.

2) Photo-voltaic cells that generate electricity. These are very expensive, and are not really a viable choice. Even if you want to get carbon-free electricity (we do), there are cheaper ways.

For both kinds, there is the "embodied energy" of making, transporting and fitting the panel, which has a negative impact on the environment. But, especially with water heating, the reduced emissions from using the panels very quickly make up for this.

They  use a permanent source of free renewable energy

that does not  contaminate the environment. In this way they help to lower the oil dependency for energy and lower the pollution in the atmosphere.  At the rate that oil prices are rising it is becoming a better alternative for heating household water, commercial uses and for certain manufacturing processes.  Some improvements have been made that make  them very efficient among them the vacuum tube solar collectors.
