Question:

What's happening with Kieran Fallon?

Just wondered what the scoop is on Fallon these days? Being in the US, I'm a bit out of the loop and wondered how the trail was going? Mildly curious as I used to work with him and his brother at Jimmy Fitzgerald's. We had a Christmas party at his cottage, arranged by his brother without his knowledge and he got out of bed and went ballistic - very amusing. Any opinions on the outcome too would be appreciated!

  1. The trial is till ongoing, they think it could take up to 4 months.

There has been so much going on in the trial that it is not easy to give a brief summery.  Your best bet is to register with the Racing Post webiste and read their reports.

To be VERY brief, it turns out that Fallon had several unregistered mobile phones (jockeys are supposed to register all of their phones with the BHA so that they can be traced to make sure they are not being used to pass on inside information) and from these phones text messages were sent to Philip Sherkle (Fallon's ex-driver) who allegedly passed them on to Miles Rodgers.  These text messages are in a kind of code, which the police claim indicated the time of a race, the number of the horse and an "n" to indicate the horse would NOT win.

They also have a plane ticket with Fallon's name on for a flight to Spain with Miles Rodgers et al, suposedly to meet the "Mr Big" behind the scam.

If Fallon and the others are not guilty of fixing races they are certainly guilty of associating with "undesirables" - people that the BHA have warned off as being detrimental to the integrity of the sport.  Whilst this is not punishable under criminal law, it IS punishable under BHA rules.

It has also transpired that the police officer leading the investigation had been offered a job by the BHA Security Department and the defense claim that as a result he is "out to get" Fallon and the others.

Several trainers (Luca Cumani, Michael Bell, Alan Jarvis and John Dunlop amongst them) have testified and there has been little criticism of the jockeys concerned from them.

Hmm, that was supposed to be brief!  Time will tell as to the outcome I guess.

  2. Are you talking about being accused for fixing races?  Wasn't this a couple years ago?  I could be wrong, maybe time doesn't go as fast as it feels.  LOL
