Question:

What's happening with my spayed *****?

My 7 year old GSD was spayed in March of this year. She is acting like she wants to mate. My neutered dog is trying to mount her like he used to do when she was in season and my sister's dog an intact male was giving her a lot of attention and he also was trying to mount her. She was in fact encouraging both of them.

What's going on?

  1. Is her v***a swollen?

Does she have any type of vaginal discharge?

If so, she may have had a botched spay and actually be in season or have a infection.

If no, then have you had any other intact breeding females around her?

If you have she may be reacting due to smelling their hormones (especially if she has whelped before).

  2. Sigh... it's sad how many people need to ask this question.

Mounting is NOT usually a sexual activity.  It's a dominance activity.  She's not trying to mate.  She's playing "king of the mountain" - or - if I knock you down, that proves I'm the alpha dog! -!-

  3. This might be an explanation:

What these are saying is, if any ovarian tissue was missed during the spay, it can still trigger hormonal changes that bring on signs  of heat.  (Google "ovarian remnant syndrome in dogs").  Vaginal infection could be another possible cause.  Good luck.
