Question:

What's happening with our eggplants?

Our eggplant plants seem to be thriving. They're making a lot of blooms, but the blooms aren't turning into fruit. This is the first year we've grown our own, and we're not sure what's going on. One article I read said to "mist them to help them set fruit", but they didn't explain how or with what I'm supposed to mist them. Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. Like all fruit, they need bees and moisture to get fertilized. Often tomatoes, eggplants and peppers will develop flowers before they are ready and the blossom will drop. Eventually the plant gets big enough and the blossom drop stops. Another possible problem is too much fertilizer. If the plant is very healthy and growing a lot of leaves it will not "feel the need' to develop fruit. If you stop fertilizing the blossom drop may stop. Finally very high temperatures will inhibit fruit formation. If you have had many days of 95+ it may be too hot for your egg plants. I always find they do better in August and September when the days are getting shorter and cooler.
