  1. because you are familiar with playing a brass instrument, it might be easier for YOU to switch to french horn. but if you played a clarinet it would be easier to switch to oboe.

but you can certainly switch to whatever instrument you want.

if you can play one instrument, you can play them all.

  2. both are desperately needed instruments!!!

it may be easier to move to french horn (brass to brass) than to oboe (double reed).

    some things that may help you decide;

-oboe does not take much air

-you cant march with an oboe

-horn gets some awesome counter melody parts

-oboe gets as much melody as flute

-colleges need oboeists more than horn players (can you say scholarship?)

  3. i guess oboe would be harder for you to play

because it uses reeds and that is different from french horns or trombones

so i think it would be easier for you to switch to french horn

i think bands need oboes more..

  4. for you, i would say oboe would be harder, since your a fellow brass player :) and also, its super expensive to buy oboe reeds, i think you'd be better off playing french horn

  5. French horn, I would have to say, is more difficult. It's very frustrating for beginners playing the french horn because it's quite a hassle to play in tune. I would say go for oboe =]

  6. french horn is better...and easier...u r coming from a brass so stay with brass...and if u r planning to be in a marching band...oboe isnt in the marching band..well at least for my school it isnt

  7. Going from trombone,  oboe is going to be harder.... to learn... to blow.... to practice...  to buy reeds for (at $15.00 a pop).  You are already experienced in a brass instrument.  It makes much more sense to move from brass to brass than from brass to woodwind,  especially the oboe.  Good french horns are the director's dream... and good oboes are too,  but the skill it takes to become good at the oboe sometimes leaves the top band without one,  as the director would rather have a good oboe player in that group or no oboe at all.   Take both instruments home for about a week and give both a fair trial....    I think it will not take you long to make a decision... as you do have instrument playing experience.   Thanks for reading...

  8. Why would you wanna switch! trombones the best! (nah jk) All instruments have their own type of difficulty. Oboe requires a double reed and new fingerings (very complicated looking). And french horn has a smaller mouthpiece, plays out of tune for beginners, and new fingerings. Considering you're a trombone player I would SUGGEST going to french horn because french horns have a beautiful sound when you are use to it and famous composers, such as John Williams, feature French Horns.  Oboes are really important to a band too, but to be honest, oboes sound kinda blehhh >.<

This is just a single persons suggestion but it's up to you to decide.
