What's in a lifegaurding test?

What tests will they ask you to do for your pool or lake lifegaurding?

I got certified at Red Cross and heres what I did...

Took the class w/ CRP/AED/Lifeguard Training and First Aid. My test consisted of 50 questions from the handbook you get. They were over rescues, dives, first aid, entries, AED, CPR, legality [consent], and misc duties.

The next part of the test was a scenario. Spot the victim, assess the situation, check ABC's, call paramedics, follow thru.

Next was a walkthru of AED. Check the patient, apply pads, analyze victim, shock or not to shock.

Finally we had to swim 3000m. Dispaly front crawl, back stroke, breast, side, elementry back and butterfly.

The test is the hardest part. The job is the simplest thing.... because honestly, I work at 3 pools part time and only had one rescuse that wasnt neccesary, 1 allergic recation, and 1 broken arm. The reaction and arm was taken to the hospital before I had to do anything.

Good luck and its a rewarding job if you're going to do it.

P.S. All these tests and stuff were from MY pool with MY instructor, and MY Red Cross legion. YOu probably wont do the same things, but a variant of them.

First, you will have to take a written (usually multiple choice) test.

If you pass that, they take you to do on-site scenarios.  ex) with a backboard, someone drowning in deep water, submerged drowner, etc..

You will also have to do a test on CPR, where your instructor will give you the scenario and what happens after each thing that you do. ex: you give three rescue breaths, but still no pulse. what do you do in response to that? and then you do it.

That's basically what I had to do when I took the test for pool lifegaurding. It's really not that bad.   The worst part is probably CPR, but as long as you got that down pretty well, you're all set to pass.
