Boyfriend is going with his family, apparently there's high terrorism/crime levels, can anyone confirm this or give me some idea how dangerous it is? Thank you. Not sure if I'm overreacting here but I do care about him!

  1. Hey,

I understand your concerns. At the times of post elections I would not recommend it. I was due to travel myself but had to cancel. At present time, no problem. Take it from me, Your boyfriend is safer than I would be in Kenya. Off cause you should take some precautions when in a foreign country where you do not know anybody. As for Kenya, the storm is over and the boats with tourist have started to sail in! Don't worry. Do advice him though for me, he should not travel or go to unfamiliar places without a guide. And yes at night he should not roam around in dark corners of the streets. This advice depends on the location he is going to visit. Nairobi? Mombasa? Kisumu? they all have their ratings when it comes to safety. If he is Mombasa you could contact me and I will arrange that he is well taken cared of just in case you are still worried. Ask your tour agent for more details and if there is anything you need, do not hesitate to contact me.

  2. You are overreacting.  Yes, there are dangers - as there are in most African countries, but as long as he takes necessary precautions, he'll be fine.  I.e. not carrying around valuables or lots of cash, not being obvious about having cameras etc, not driving out of town at night, locking doors when driving around in Nairobi and keeping the windows mostly shut, not venturing alone into areas he does not know and also taking care of his health.

The Kenyan people are amongst the friendliest you will ever meet, and I'm sure he will have an awesome time...by the time he gets back you'll be green with envy, hearing about all the things he has seen!  I've been to Kenya twice for work, and have never felt in the least bit threatened.

  3. Most tourist information regarding crime/safety and health in Kenya and indeed Africa and anywhere that is not in Europe or America is exaggerated. I believe this is to make you take out a much higher travel insurance. Indeed i have been mugged twice walking the streets of London in seven months time and none while walking in the darkest hours of the day in Dar es Salaam in my lifetime.

Let your boyfriend go and enjoy himself and do not be worried. In any foreign country, you tend to settle automatically. The hotel staff are always a useful source of information. Kenya is one of the most tourist friendly countries in Africa and it does have it's fair share of crime.

Do advise your boyfriend to stay off drugs for the duration of his visit and not to indulge in stuff like prostitution.

  4. that's so sweet of u!well yes, there's high crime levels there in kenya..it's not too safe to roam around the city  after 6pm usually...i've heard this from my frns...but still there r many tourists in kenya...

    :)

  5. it' s always a threat, but do check the state department website for current threats.  I've worked with Kenyan's.  and even they suggest if you ever go, go with someone that knows the country.  also,  stick to main areas and known organizations/retail places.  like stay at the Hyatt, don't stay at the Hotel Kenya south.  if you take a safari, do the same.  deal with the reputable company that works with the Hyatt.

  6. Kenya is safe for anyone, Even at the height of recent crisis which was triggerd by rigged election. Kenya like much areas in africa always welcome visitors with open arms. In fact any european or american can even visit neighbouring somalia without any problem as long the are not in military uniform and have a local guide to show them around. That is why it important to have someone with you all times you wander around as you could enter some dangerous areas. As long as you book your holiday with a tour firm or get a local experienced tour gudes to help you. The  capital nairobi is mostly okay  except few slums , Much of central area is heavily patrolled by police and it where most tourist stay. Travelling inland is much safer and should be done in daytime only.

'Karibu kenya' which means welcome to kenya
