What's it like living in Brick Lane?

I've got the opportunity of moving into a flat in the area but have no prior knowledge. Any recommendations? Things to watch out for(good and/or bad)? I also have a car, so what's the area like for resident parking? Any input would be gratefully appreciated.

  1. For parking, Tower Hamlets council requires you to have a Residents permit. These doesn't mean you can park anywhere, there are still restrictions.

  2. I presume you mean Brick Lane in the Eastend of London. Nowadays it has a very Asian feel to it, with some of the best Indian restaurants. One of them has a Michelin star chef. You are in the heart of what was once Jack the Ripper territory. There is the famous Brick Lane market and Petticoat Lane where just about everything is sold. Parking may be a great problem, but it is easy to get into the city with tube, Aldgate and Aldgate East. Also main line at Liverpool Street together with a variety of buses. You are not far from Tower of London and its lovely to go for a stroll along the Thames. Brick Lane is not the prettiest of areas but it is certainly full of life and very cosmopolitan. Not the cleanest of areas either. Before you make a final commitment try to stay in the area for a couple of weeks to get the feel to make sure it is right for you.

    Enjoy your life.

  3. I know the area very well, working beside it in Liverpool Street. The area is very multicultural and has some amazing Indian restaurants. You may struggle for residential parking as their are few bays but you should be able to arrange it for nearby roads. I would recommend that you have a quick walk around the street as some of it can be a little run down with older council buildings in need of repair. But then on the flip side the road has a great sense of life and is very vibrant with a lot of small trendy cafes dotted about.

No matter what though go see before you move, if its not right for you you'll save yourself a lot of hardship and worry. Its the most sensible course of action.
