I'm moving to Cornwall soon from Birmingham and just want your opinion on the City of Plymouth. I know Plymouth isn't in Cornwall but it's close so i might travel there for work. I want to know things like traffic, crime, how many people live there and if it's a nice place :-D

  1. Plymouth is generaly laid back and peacefull.

There is little violence compared to other cities.

It has the Cornish laid back feel about it whilst being a working city. You'll see lots of people casualy walking about town day and night with boardies on and drinking in the many outside bars.

the music scene in Plymouth is well established and you mainly have the alternatives there..Indie, reggae, blues, ska, with the sugary dance and poppy elements on the outskirts (these places tend to harbour the more violent individuals though).

You will generaly feel very relaxed and happy in Plymouth as it is a vibrant city with lots of culture, history and fresh influences constantly feeding it.

It is being developed at the moment and as a result looks much prettier than it did 5 years ago.

Traffic is mediochre. During the rush hours you will find it takes along time to get to the centre via car but during other times it is very smooth flowing.

The best option is either the park and ride, which is situated 2 miles from the centre or taking the train, which is half a mile from the centre.

I'm not sure on the amount of people who live there but it doesn't seem over-crowded in the slightest.

    Chons da!

  2. It's rather like any other City, there are good parts, and bad parts. Don't expect it to be gorgeous, just because it's Devon though, as there are some pretty rough run down area's. Let me know what part of Cornwall you are moving to, and I will give you a run-down.

  3. I live about 30 miles away, and I like Plymouth. There's not much you can't find there. In your situation though, I think I'd live nearer the job, and travel in to Plymouth for specifics.

The reasons? Two. Plymouth access roads are horrific, and get snarled up with traffic, especially at rush hour.  There are traffic lights everywhere. This would add considerable time to your working day. Ex-colleagues of mine transferred to Plymouth used to aim to get there at about 7.00am. The second reason is the toll on the Tamar Bridge between Saltash and Plymouth. Have to pay to get into Devon, but not into Cornwall. On a regular basis this adds cost to your journey, and well as sometimes causing delays.
