  1. It depends on the type of monarchy.  In Britain, for example, we have a constitutional monarchy, whereas there are still examples elsewhere in the world of absolutist monarchies.

    An absolutist monarchy is simply a hereditary dictatorship, although probably more politically stable than most dictatorships.

    In a constitutional monarchy, there can be a level of freedom and democracy that is comparable with republican democracies.  The Head of State is unelected but has little, if any, political power.  The Head of State is largely a ceremonial, rather than a political position.
