My partner has work there and we may have to move. I've only driven into the town to go to Rainbow Beach. Can anyone who lives there tell me what it's like. We also have a 2month old little girl. Are the shopping centres good? What are the people like?

  1. i cant wait to see what answers you get here, my family is looking into migrating to QLD and Gympie really stands out to me, like the look of the local schools and would like to find out more, so will be watching the answers you get carefully

  2. I lived there for 6 years but it's a l - o - n - g time ago.  it's a biggish country town.  People are good, the schools then were good, shopping was OK I guess.  We lived on Cootharaba Road with a lot of undeveloped land behind us, so I had a ball there as a kid.

For the sake of one other answerer, I went to the Gympie High School and it was one of the best in the state at the time.   Our geography class topped the state one year.  Teacher said he needed new hats as all his old ones were too small after that.  The One Mile State Primary school had it's own swimming pool then, it was probably the best primary school in town at the time.

There was a bit of "culture" about too, choirs and amateur dramatics were popular then. One woman had a bit of a reputation as a poet and writer, can't quite recall her name though it might have been Ward.

Field hockey, Rugby League, cricket, netball, basketball, lawn bowls, golf (good golf course and friendly too) and tennis were local sports.

Very hilly and the streets run every which way, someone said the street map looked like a plate of spaghetti.

If you buy a house avoid the bottoms of the hills as they get cold a lot earlier in the evenings than the higher ground.  Also be careful of places near the river, which is flood prone.

Actually I think it is a pretty good place.  Sewered, good water supply, phones and electricity OK too.  I'd go back.

  3. I dont personally live there but my friend lives close by. they town is nice and and they have some good shops. most people are great very friendly as it is known as being very country orientated. lots of horses around there. schools i have heard are good. thats really all i know.

  4. I spent part of my childhood in Gympie and regularly visit.I hope others who live there now answer you but this is what I know:

There is a woolworths, main town shopping centre, best n less etc. there is a couple of centres.

    The people are lovely.

    There is sports.

Join a nursing mothers group, play group, or some community group and you will soon be one of the locals.

    Good luck and enjoy.

  5. I don't live there either but have been there a couple of times because of Rainbow Beach.I had a friend who worked there as a teacher and she hated the three years she was up there.

She said that the people can be rude and she felt lonely.Unfortunately I heard the same things from other teachers as well.I do believe that if you try to fit in than it is easier.

They have all sort of shops for groceries and other retailers.I am not sure whether you want to work there too?I heard that child care places are hard to obtain as there is a long waiting list.
