I'm living in Toronto but I think 6 years is enough to live in one place for me. I consider moving to Ottawa or Montreal. I have been to both places twice. I really liked the impressions that I got from my trips.

So, plz tell me what's it like to live in those places? If you're living in one of the cities, tell me what you like and don't.

I'd like to know some details based on your experience; they include cost of living, public transportaion system, convenience, atmosphere, people, safety, pollution, uniqueness, etc.

Thank you for your time.

  1. Hi. I'm from Ottawa.

Cost of Living: fairly affordable, cheaper than T.O., good varied selection of apartments, house shares, single rooms, houses, etc.

Public Transport: Bus system is great. Frequent, reliable service. $3 per trip but your ticket lasts 1.5hrs. Or you can buy monthly passes. There's a "thing" called the O-Train. It's a light rail disaster of a project that has the stupidest route ever. I won't get into it as I doubt you will ever use it. Hardly anyone does.

Convenience: Depending on where you live, I suppose. But certain areas and neighbourhoods are surrounded by all neccessities. Ottawa is small enough that if you didn't have a car, you'd still be ok getting around. Lots of good malls and shops.

Atmosphere: Not a *huge* party city, but still quite good nightlife. We don't get a lot of concerts though (the bands often skip Ottawa and just do T.O. and Mtl). Lots of things to do: summer concerts, winter carnivals, museums. Tons of different ethnic restaurants.

    People: Friendly, cultural, diverse, polite.

Safety: depending on the area. Avoid the Vanier neighbourhood at all costs! Generally low crime rate (only about 10-15 murders per year), not really a big gang presence.

Pollution: basically nothing compared to Toronto. No smog. Not really a problem regarding litter.

Uniqueness: It's a small city (population of 1 million including the suburbs) with a big feel. Oh and it's way colder her in the winter than T.O. Do you like -40 degrees? haha. I suppose that's fairly unique, right?

***I just want to note that I am a frequent visitor to Montreal and I really really like it there, too. I just don't think I'm french enough to build a successful career. Gorgeous city, though. It's just a 2hr drive away so if you pick Ottawa, Montreal will never be far.

I think whatever choice you make you will be happy.
