What's it like to live in Wellington, NZ?

I love Wellington.  It's my second home.  I spent six years living there and only moved away because I was going to London for my OE.  And the only reason I didn't move back there was because I came back to NZ when I got pregnant and I wanted to be close to my parents.

I still get down there three or four times a year.  It really is a wonderful city.  It has a fantastic 'feel' to it, there's always something to do or see, the cafe culture is fantastic... I just love it.

Its windy and ok. Great hill suburbs and cafes. Nice compact city with a refreshing lack of massive malls.

My friends who live there love the place.

I moved here about a month and a half ago and I love it.

The climate isn't that great, but it actually gets more sun hours and any other city in New Zealand (and London) and less rainfall than Auckland.

Warmest month: February (17°C average)

Coldest month: July (8.7°C average)

Average daily maximum for mid-summer: 20.3°C

Average daily minimum for mid-winter: 5.9°C

Average annual sunshine: 2025 hours

Average annual rainfall: 1270mm

It's a very arty city, there is always something to go and do. The people here and pretty nice. I could definitely live here and raise a family in this city.

I love Wellington. Been living overseas for a couple of years now. I'm definately going to go back eventually to settle. Wellington is similar to Melbourne, Australia. Heaps of culture - art, music, and a relaxed vibe. If you are looking for image conscious people then don't head to Wellington! ;)

One of the windiest cities in the world, chilly in summer and cold in winter.

I wouldn't be able to tolerate it based on those facts alone!

I agree with the second answer. I have lived in Wellington my whole life apart from a year or so in the UK. It is the only city I will ever live in in NZ - Auckland is bigger but it is quite sprawled out and unattractive. Wellington is small enough that it has a community vibe and it is quite easy to get everywhere but big enough that there is a lot to see and do. It is very pretty with a lot of hills and coastline. The weather can be atrocious at times but as they say you 'can't beat Wellington on a good day'. When the sun is out everyone stops what they are doing and goes out to enjoy it and everyone has a smile on their face. We don't take good weather for granted!

Wellington is fairly relaxed and unpretentious, it has a huge cafe culture and a lot of good restaurants, as well as art galleries and plenty of arts festivals. I would definitely highly recommend it if you can handle a few howling southerlies in the winter months :)

I live in Wellington and have neen here thirteen eyars minus three years in the UK . I think its a good city to live in if you like an easy pace of life with a small population. There is a good cafe/bar scene and theatre, festival of the arts etc.

weather wise its not as cold in february as wabby states..feb/march are actually the warmest times averaging 20-22 degrees. winter is'nt too bad, we  rarely get snow or ice.

employment wise, its the capital city so has a lot of government work..there is also alot of work in the service industry.
