Question:

What's it mean to let the engines stabalize?

Just wondering; commonly I hear advanced thrust to 70% N1, let the engines stabalize and then advanced to full thrust?

My guess is to let the engine RPM catch up to the RPM you want it to run at . . . ?

  1. this stabalizing of  the engines is completely unnecessary and makes no sense. who cares if the engines stabalize at a power setting below takeoff power. this kind of mentality lead to the deaths of many aboard palm 93. power up and power up now on every takeoff. if everything isn't in the green at takeoff power you need to know that sooner than later.

  2. Stabilizing in any event is to bring parameters into sync,  Avriofan as usual is spot on.  JB, also typically let his Alligator mouth overload his Canary @ss.  Whether it be in marriage or engines or flight energy; stabilization means all things are in sync.

If someone is not aware of that, they are the next statistics.  unless they are only a keyboard pilot.  I vote Avro for best answer/

  3. This is more to make sure that the guages are all in the green and that everything is working properly before you get in the air.  Kind of the equivelent of doing a run up in a piston plane.  If everything is in the green and good then you go aheahd and set T/O power.

  4. Your guess is right - 100 percent.

When you spool up the engines, there is a time lag before they wind up (the turbines need time to build up speed due to inertia) and settle on the power selected by the pilot. By the time the RPM selected reaches RPM indicated, all other gauges also reach their corresponding readings. The pilots then let the engines run at this selected setting for a few seconds before advancing to full power.During this time they are also able to verify that all systems are on 'go'.

This known as letting the engines stabilise.
