Question:

What's it take to start a canoe renting business?

If anyone's ever started one, I'd love to know the formalities such as insurance, liability, or things like that.

Basically, if anyone can just give me a very short list of things that I need to make sure that I get/do, I'd greatly appreciate it.

This is my list so far, but it's no where near in the realm of legal stuff:

1. Get canoes (duh).

2. Get life jackets.

This is where I draw a blank. I need to know what contracts/papers need to be signed so that a) the renters are safe, and b) I am safe from any legal battles with the state and/or potential stupid people who get hurt.

Thanks for any help!

  2. You have two of the very essential steps.

Add these.  You need a pond, lake or river that is suitable for canoes.

You need a ton of insurance as well as a motorboat for rescue if some of your canoers get in trouble on the water.

You need a license from the town, county or other jurisdiction which regulates the waterway as well as the business community.

See an attorney and I would also suggest visits to city and county clerks, as well as anyone who manages code compliance.

    Good luck.
