Fast Bowlers (like- Lee, Malinga, Edwards) or Medium Fast bowlers (like- Zaheer Khan, Hoggard).

Would you rather have 4 fast bowlers in your team OR 4 medium fast bowlers in your team ?, which bowling attack would be the more successful ?

  1. I need to know some more things about the bowlers. Then i will decide whether to pick 4 fast bowlers or 4 medium pacers(and i will never choose 4 same kind of bowlers)

It will be wrong to say that fast bowlers are more effective in odi cricket or slow bowlers are more effective.

The success of these bowlers depend on a lot of other factors as well-

    *Their accuracy.

    *Pitch

    *Weather

    *Variety in their bowling.

    *Temperament

I will take all these factors into account before deciding who is better for me in a particular match.I will also take into account what kind of opposition batsmen am i playing against.

Speed is one of the so many factors.I will not make a decision by just looking at one aspect of the bowler(speed in this case)

Shaun Tait and Brett Lee are both fast bowlers.

Now according to this question they will both be categorised in the same group but we know that the difference between them is huge.

Chaminda Vaas and Yasir Arafat are both medium pace bowlers.

According to this question, again they both will be in same group (medium pacers)

But there is no comparison between the two.

I will have a mixture of fast and medium pace bowlers.I will select atleast 1 fast bowler in the team even if he's not so accurate.

  2. i think spinners are more successful becoz they can play long time if they are good enough and less chance of injury.

  3. its all depends on PITCH condition

if its green top 5 fast bowler

if its crack thn 3 spin 1 medium and 1 fast

if its flat 3 medium 1 fast andd 1 spin.

  4. Its a good question actually. The thing with pacers is that they are quick (obviously) and have a very aggressive form of bowling and deliveries such as bouncers and block hole yorkers are ridiculously effective. But at that pace, it does leave much time for the ball to swing. Therefore you are relying on the pace ALMOST (not entirely) all the time. Also, you add four quickies and the batsman, if he's good, will start settling in. The only other problem that i can think of is that they will wear the ball out faster and so if you have only four pacers, you'll get a rough ball pretty soon.

Medium pacers however, do not have that kind of sting or mental projection of attack. And yes, it allows the batsman to pick his shot for a little longer. and its hard to really scare the batsman. However, because his pace is slower, it allows the ball to do more in the air. This kind of movement is exactly what helped McGrath get his wickets. They also have more opportunity to decieve batsmen. More swing, more seam as well while the ball stays shiny for longer.. I persoanlly think its harder to settle into a rhythm with medium pacers ( partly cos i am one) and they may just have the edge.

  5. i would go with one good quality fast bowler ( Lee ) , one medium fast ( ganguly) , one part time spinner ( Sachin/ jayasuriya) & one pro spinner ( warne, murali )

the reason for this being that , in crunch situations the keeper can stand up to the wicket n help save a by run or effect a stumping . .

the thing with part time bowlers is, the batsmen looses his focus n ease into comfort mode underestimating the part timer . .so he's in with a good chance . .

but i guess a lot depends on where ur playing . . n the opposition !

  6. Depends on the wicket. Horses for courses as they say

  7. mediem pacers get much better line and length but they can also get pretty good swing so i would go with 2 pacers and 2 medium for a variable attack.

  8. ishant sharma and praveen kumar

  9. I would say the most devastating attack I have ever seen is that of the WI in the late 70's and early 80's, which of course consisted entirely of pace. A a bat I always feel relatively comfortable against medium pacers, and tended to be more wary of true quicks , they could hurt !!!

  10. fast bowlers

  11. fast bowling

  12. In a Test Match: I would like to have an off spinner like Murali and a leg spinner like Anil or Grimmett in the team along with great fast bowlers like Colin Croft, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner for the attack. I do not think medium pacers are very effective. I feel that fast bowlers are needed if they can be put to work along with 2 spinners.

In a ODI: I would like to have 4 genuinely quick bowlers like Shane Bond, Brett Lee, Allan Donald, Len Pascoe aided by one spinner like Saqlain for the attack. Medium pacers are not good enough.

  13. Chr*st how many people can't read a question? "I'll have two of each" "3 quicks and a spinner"... morons all.

To answer your Q, four fast-mediums would be the best bet, not knowing anything else about pitch or atmospheric conditions. Four quicks can go for a lot of runs very quickly, and most of them bowl too fast to swing the ball.

  14. I'd prefer four fast medium bowlers who make the batsman play every ball.

    This attack:

    Glenn McGrath

    Alec Bedser

    Ian Botham

    Chaminda Vaas

would probably be as effective as any other 4-seamer attack. The accuracy (and movement off the pitch) of McGrath and Bedser, the left arm swing of Vaas and the golden arm of Botham. Not only would they take wickets, but the opposition would have awful trouble scoring any runs, putting themselves under even more pressure.

  15. medium fast bowlers are reliable & consistant

fast bowlers cant be trusted lolz

  16. go with atleast one real good fast bowler and 3 medium pace accurate bowlers with good line and length

  17. well depends on the bowler i guess but i think id prefer 4 medium fast bowlers because fast bowlers tend to go for a lot of runs even the good ones.

But really id like to have 1 Fast bowler and 3 medium fasts.

but imagine Bond, Lee, Aktar and Malinga bowling.

    What about 4 spinners? lol

  18. I think you need a mixture of bowlers. All types can be effective: Hoggard the fast medium has as good a record as Lee the fast bowler.

If there are all of the same type, then playing them can become predictable. Plus, different styles suit different conditions. Brett Lee could be devastating on a hard, bouncy pitch like Perth, but Hoggard would be more effective on a pitch like Headingley.

However, if I had to choose between just having 4 fast bowlers, or just having 4 medium fast men, then I would pick 4 fast bowlers. They would be more likely to get a response from a lifeless pitch then the medium fasts.

  19. How about 2 of each? ....lol

  20. I would definitely go for the fasties.

They have a mental effect on the batsman and if they are good bowlers i.e the bowlers who bowl good lines and lengths I can't think of anything better.

Fast bowlers always gear up the batsman and puts him literally on the back foot.A batsman is never comfortable when a fast bowler is on his run-up.

Fast bowlers give probably a second for batsmen to choose the shot, get into position and play the shot. This increases the chances for mistakes.

Although accurate medium pacers wouldn't be bad if they are too slow it will give plenty of time to the batsman.

So my choice are the fasties.

  21. When fast bowling works its lethal. However, two problems.

    1) Because of the maximum effort that is put in it is harder to be consistant and when it goes wrong, it can go badly wrong. Stephen Harmison is the prime example of this. Fidel Edwards had a similar problem early in his career (Remember 2004 against England - he seemed to bowl more no-balls than legal ones)

    2) Again because of maximum effort, they are more prone to long-term injuries, especially if they are English - Flintoff, Simon Jones etc...

Medium pacers are really good because they don't often have these problems. The one problem is though that just be being 10-15 mph slower, batsman have a lot longer (Ok, just a few tenths of a second, but it all counts) to watch the ball and decide on a shot.

That's why it is good to have a mixture if the two - 2 of each and a spinner. It's the variation that often gets batsman - having to adapt to a new style of bowler every 5-10 overs.

  22. Instead of going with all fast bowlers or all medium pace bowlers, it will be advantageous to go with the mix of Fast and medium pace bowlers.

  23. It would go for 4 Fast bowlers and ask them to bowl in good line.

  24. I would go with one accurate fast bowler to open the innings and two medium fast bowlers and one good spinner that can also bat and a part time spinner to bowl for the rest of the innings.

  25. 4 quicks.
