What's more expensive to own a rabbit or guinea pig?

They're both about the same, cost wise. Guinea pigs may be a little more because it's best to keep them in pairs as they can get depressed otherwise, whereas rabbits won't suffer alone, though, if well planned, they can go as a pair.

Which is 'better' is your choice. Rabbits can scratch, guinea pigs don't. Guinea pigs are skittish, rabbits aren't too skittish after they're used to you. Rabbits may live longer, though this may be a con as well.

My guinea pigs eat more food per pig than my rabbit eats, so that's a little more expensive.

Their cages are made out of the same materials (Neat Idea Cubes, http://www.guineapigcages.com/cubes.htm) and cost about the same to make.

Neither use any traditional "bedding" - the rabbit is litter trained and the guinea pigs are kept on fleece - so no cost there.

I'd say the biggest expense would be getting a rabbit spayed or neutered, which is recommended. One of my guinea pigs is neutered, but only so he can living with my females. With rabbits, though, it affects health and behavior, so it's recommended for even pet rabbits kept alone.

If you can only get one animal, get a rabbit - guinea pigs really need to be kept in pairs, but rabbits can be perfectly happy on their own.

Well I owned 9 rabbits and 1 guinea pig at the same time and personally, I prefer rabbits. Not swaying your decision, just my opinion. Rabbits will probably cost a bit more as they need a little bit more food and water as they are of course, larger. They generally cost about the same except for the little bit more food, thats about all.
