Question:

What's nicer to live in, Auckland or Wellington?

Seems like I can now choose between two jobs, one in Auckland, New Zealand, and one in Wellington.

They are both equally nice, but which city is nicer to live in?

I hear Auckland is frantic and Wellington is windy - that's as far as my knowledge stretches.

I currently live in Dunedin and would be happy to have it warmer, but I also like it calm and peaceful.

What would you suggest?

  1. Wellington for sure. My uncle is moving to Auckland soon and is not too happy about it although he does get other benefits (job, car etc.)

Auckland is very busy and has lots of traffic problems. Like Wabby, I use to live in Brisbane too.

I now live in Wellington, so yeah. It's pretty cool here but windy as you say. There are some really quite areas around here that you would like. Move to Wellington, although if you like Auckland then go for it.

Do what ever makes you happy!

    Thanks

  2. Guess the name I chose expresses how I feel.....LOL

I have lived in Wellington and now live in Auckland.

We moved to Wellington from Australia and I can't express how much I loved it there. After that we moved to several other cities.

Yes Wellington does have the winds

but Auckland is also very windy - it's just that the winds are not quite as strong.

Auckland is very humid - Wellington is not.

Auckland is very spread out so you don't feel part of anywhere as you do in Wellington

The people in Wellington are the best (or they were) of anywhere I have ever lived in my life.

Homes are slightly cheaper in Wellington.

Auckland is warmer than Wellington if you are someone who likes the beach and so forth - and that would be about my only plus.

If I was able to chose where to live I would choose Wellington without hesitation.

It is not advisable to go to some parts of Wellington city at night - cuba mall is one of them

  3. absolutely positively wellington!!! :D

  4. Wellingtons got beter shopping, way beter shopping and the people are nicer :P

  5. Wellington.......but not by much

they both have advantages even taking the weather into consideration.......

  6. WELLINGTON, Congrats on the choice of jobs, hope all works well for you.

  7. If I could choose, I would go to Auckland. Don't know why, but thats what I'am feeling.

  8. Hi, I live in Wellington atm, and sometimes I feel lonely, like there is nothing in Wellington to do. For example when I'm walking through the city at night, there is noone on the streets, not even any cars. It's kind of creepy. I wish Wellington had more stuff to do. Shops close at like 5.30pm on most days, so it's pretty hard to go shopping after work etc.

HOWEVER. I would not even think about moving to Auckland. I've been there and I just didn't like it.

  9. Welly is my choise, Auckland is a big city and has all the good and bad that brings, Welly is cosy - the wind and climate do suck though

  10. Wellington!

You can wlak from one side of inner city wellington to the other side in like 20 mins. In Auckland it takes hours!

I like Wellington because its not too big but not too small. It doesnt have those really dangerous area's like Auckland has eg, the rough parts of town. And wellington is safe to walk around at night.

When i went to Auckland on holiday for the first time I couldnt WAIT to come back to wellington! Wellington is a very charming city and pretty much everyone who visits falls in love with it :o)

  11. wellington thats where im from yea!!

  12. Wellington. I live in Dunedin. It's pretty windy here tonight though and it's been quite mild today. I couldn't stand the hecticness of Auckland, yet I use to live in Sydney and Brisbane.

  13. Hi

I was born and raised here. so that is my bias. i also might say that unlike many people i dont have a problem with Auckland - my viewpoint is solely from the pro - wellington perspective rather than Anti Auckland. I hope that makes sense because i know full well that there are some lovely places in Auckland.  But, what i can say is that Wellington is my home and i love it.

I love the fact that on any given night i could go to a community theatre show in Lower Hutt or Tawa,I could go to a frightfully trendy bar in Wellington such as Mighty Mighty and feel that regardless if whether I feel like acting 18 or 50 (neither my age) then i can enjoy myself. I can see Odessa at Bar Bodega or i can see many other shows. If i want to have a coffee at as starbucks or a free trade cafe i can. If i want to shop i can. and i can shop within a three minute walk of each other.

I should say that due to the fact i grew up here i should not comment on the weather - basically, wellington gets wind, auckland gets rain. But i wouldn't chose a place because of that. But again, i grew up here and i don't notice it :)

As i said, i don't want to denigrate Auckland (as i don't want to get into an AKL vs WLG debate)  but the impression i always had of Dunedin was that it was a bit like Wellington (slightly cruddier weather but still funky) but a bit bigger, warmer and cosmopolitan. Hope i don't offend people with that comment :)

Basically, Wellington has many many suburbs/areas where if you wanted to just live there you could. If you wanted to venutre further you could do that also. Suits me and I love it :)
