Question:

What's not to believe?

So, global warming, some say, is a scam, and not real. I agree that yes, the earth has warmed and cooled over many millions of years. but over those millions of years, we didn't have cars, trucks, powerplants, nuclear weapons... so how do you respond to that? here's something else to think about...

help stop global warming

possible outcomes:

If it doesn't exist--- we make the planet a better place

If it does exist---- we save the world

Don't help stop global warming

Possible outcomes:

If it doesn't exist--- the planet is just going to stay the same, but have more gases in the air

If it DOES--- We all die off.

Which situation looks brighter?

  1. your opening question needs to make a little more since, and oh they changed global warming to climate change btw.

to answer your question  you just proved that global warming is not made by man , nore does it exsist. like you said the earths climate, as well as weather has always been changing. to change the earths natural process is impossible you would also have to change the whole solar system , and somehow move the sun  farther back.

now have you ever heard of green land ?? it is coverd with ice right?? well it once was not.

Global warming is but a component, in a group of destructive forces at work such as ;deforestation, desertification, soil and water contamination ,irresponsible or wasteful utilization of bio resources , air pollution,Non sustainable Agriculture, over pumping carbon aquifers

all concepts which are definitely not part of the Natural Processes of the Natural world

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

    WHICH WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR,

The most prolific growth on this planet is part of the day in the mist and most of the time under clouds ,and the least growth is always directly in the sun .

To exchange the one for the other means changing local climates

We are exchanging Nature with Tar , concrete and open spaced mono cultures.

In 300 years half of the planets forests have gone ,and in the last 50 years half of the wet lands ,and rain forests

These Areas absorb heat during the day and release heat at night ,

Cause cloud formation(shade).humidifying the air on the surface as well as releasing excess water at the roots that keep rivers flowing ,which in turn brings more water into the Environment .

As well as contributing to absorbing carbon emissions as do the leaves of the trees together with the oceans .

All in all many factors which directly affect the local Environment .

The loss of the above resulting in rivers drying up ,less rain ,desertification, loss of habitat for many species and so on.

dryer and hotter surface environments which can manifest in different weather patterns such as tornadoes or bush fires

I may be stupid or Naive but somehow i believe that lots of these local environmental changes, can add up to affect global weather, If there are enough of them (and there are)

And then on top of that comes the story of the effects of pollutants released into Nature and especially the Air ,by MAN http://earthissues.multiply.com/photos/a...

A cocktail of events and a lot of the ingredients have MAN written all over them

So it is safe to assume that we should look at ourselves ,just a teeny bit ,for possible improvements ,and rectifying Eco errors that are with in our powers.

    What is a safer bet

to be or not to be

  3. Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

    Stop Global Warming!!!

  4. You are absolutely correct.  No matter what your opinion is on global warming, we can all do our part to preserve a clean planet for the future generations.

  5. You are just 13 and you get it.  Good for you.  The differences come from each individual doing their part.  It's all about the masses.

I really don't think that the big 'global warming' debate is worth putting out there for a vote.  People who "disagree" that there is a problem are free to do so.  It really doesn't matter.  Maybe it's a cyclic climatic change, maybe it isn't.  Whatever.

What does matter is that we all pitch in and do what we can to clean things up.  Conserve on every level.  Don't waste anything, and recycle!  Don't buy a SUV.  Don't leave the air conditioning set at 70 degrees all day while you are at work.  Keep your furnace turned down and wear a sweater around the house.  Turn off the light when you leave the room.  Take brief showers.  Teach your kids to do the same.  Vote for leaders who get it and are willing to tell lobbyists to take a hike.

  6. if trucks wern't around when the earth warmed before, that suggests that trucks didn't cause global warming then so why is it now. However you are right that we should be reducing the pollution we create and recycling etc, but is it right that man is being blamed for destroying the earth and forced to pay when there is no evidence to prove it

  7. Glad to hear from young people who care about something other than their appearance.

You are right to be concerned about our planet.

Unfortunately I think you will find it an uphill struggle.

Take a look at the flawed logic that willow uses to argue that 'since trucks didn't cause that last global warming event then they can't be responsible for this one ' to see what I mean about an uphill struggle!

  8. Your premise is faulty.  Just because people don't believe in global warming doesn't mean that people aren't doing what they can to reduce polution, including green house gases.

The difference is that those who believe look towards government to resolve these problems, and the only solutions government have to offer is reducing individual freedoms and raising taxes.  Neither are solutions.

  9. your confusing the issue of conservation of natural resources which benefits everyone.

with the political issue of anthropogenic global warming.

the proposed solutions to agw would only benefit  so called developing country's( primarily China & india) at the expense of the industrial countrys.

incidentally although co2 in the atmosphere has continued to rise over the past 10 years, global temperatures have not .so there is naturally some confusion  over whether we should cut our production back to 1990 levels while China & India plan to have 850 (most of them being built now)coal fired power plants spewing pollutants into the atmosphere we all share 4 years from now.

does this seem like a fair & reasonable policy to you?

  10. Yes, in principle the concept is good.  Unfortunately, if you put effort and money into solving global warming, you are taking it from somewhere else.  There will be adverse changes, and if the "problem" is not really a problem, then you are creating new problems and not solving anything.

I present to you the current problem with biofuels.  Biofuels were promoted as an alternative to oil, cleaner burning, cheaper, etc.  Yet we now see that increased production of biofuels has had an impact on food prices and availability (and yes I realize other factors come into play).

There are many environmental problems that we understand very well and know are a problem that will respond to effort and money, many of which would also improve any greenhouse gas issues if they are in fact real.

It seems to me, perhaps as a naive old guy, that it makes sense to spend money and effort (both of which are far from unlimited, after all) in producing the most improvement, where we know it will help.
