That is a person who believes in having more than one mate; it applies to women as well as to men, and is centered mostly in Mormon areas, not to say that they per se pratice it, but that it was based there when they first settled in Utah territory in the 1800's. But to bet back to your answer for your question, a polygamist is a person who ptractices multi marrage, usually it's men with many wives, around 4-5 of them at any one time. It is very much in force in Muslim countries because it's considered a way to make women less husbandless or as a sign of wealth since it takes alot of it to maintain that size household. The king of Saudi Arabia is a polygamist with lots of wives and kids.
