  1. Queen Elizabeth II is of the ROYAL HOUSE OF WINDSOR, which was originally the Royal House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.The name change occurred during World War I,right after the King's German cousin bombed Londo with 24 twin-engined GOTHA war planes.

Titled royals really don't use surnames but Royal House Names and Title names to distinquish their family branches.Non-royal,untitled descendants of the Queen's may use Mountbatten-Windsor as a surname if they need one.

    has a long explanation.

A pertinent quote is:"At a meeting of the Privy Council on 17 July 1917, George V declared that 'all descendants in the male line of Queen Victoria, who are subjects of these realms, other than female descendants who marry or who have married, shall bear the name of Windsor'.

The Royal Family name of Windsor was confirmed by The Queen after her accession in 1952. However, in 1960, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family (without changing the name of the Royal House), as Windsor is the surname used by all the male and unmarried female descendants of George V.

It was therefore declared in the Privy Council that The Queen's descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.

This reflected Prince Philip's surname. In 1947, when Prince Philip of Greece became naturalised, he assumed the name of Philip Mountbatten as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

The effect of the declaration was that all The Queen's children, on occasions when they needed a surname, would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor."

Charles didnot use Windsor on his marriage license;he signed his name Charles P,the p standing for the Latin princeps or prince.

Queen Elizabeth I was of The Royal House of Tudor.

  2. Which Queen Elizabeth?

Elizabeth I was of the House of Tudor, titled royals do not have surnames as such

Elizabeth II is a member of the House of Windsor, although Prince Charles has suggested she will be the last and he will be the first member of the House of Mountbatten-Windsor.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (the present Queen's mother) was born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and was ther daughter of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore.

  3. In the United Kingdom, our beloved Monarch is not referred to as "Queen Elizabeth" - we all know who She is - She is referred  to simply as "The Queen". Since 1917, the Royal House has been known as The House of Windsor.  When Her Majesty married The Duke of Edinburgh, She took His name of Mountbatten, but on succeeding to the Throne, issued a proclamation which confirmed the use of  The House of Windsor.
