Question:

What's so great about 20 Mbps when my connection speed says I have 100 mbps?

My question is mostly what does the 100 mbps mean. I mean when I hover over the little internet icon in the taskbar, it says "local area connection, speed: 100 mpbs, status: connected"

But then the commercial for the competing internet provider advertises 20 mbps as this great thing. What does my 100 mean? Does that mean that I have 5x the amount as the advertisement, or does it just mean that I'd have 100 mbps if I were just connected to another computer on my network?

  1. well it is default settings which appear u 100 mbps speed bt it not u can change the figure (100 to 10) from the settings of net i dont whr it is bt i know that coz i done it pastly so doesnt matter if it is shows u 100 mbps u can see in every sys that it shows u the same thing..

  2. the 100Mb connection is your computers connection to YOUR network... if you were to transfer a file between two computers on your local area network (if you have more than 1 machine) that would be the connection speed between your machines.  It's also the connection speed between your machine and your router or cable modem.  The 20Mb connection you see advertised is the conneciton rate between your cable/dls modem and the "rest of the world" or the internet.

  3. Hi there!

Your computer will say 100mbps as that is the speed it is connecting to your router, and not unnecessarily the speed of your actual internet connection. You could check your actual speed at www.speedtest.net

  4. 100 mbps would be sweet!!!!
