  1. It's all down to personal taste. Some prefer Windows due to it's ease of use. Some prefer Linux for the learning experience and the variety of OS and communities.

First, Linux is quick and requires much less resources than Windows. I'm writing this article using Linux on my laptop.

Linux is free! which means you can try as many as you wan't and not worry about serials and registration.

There is plenty of choice and communities. Ubuntu is a great OS to start using Linux with a fantastic online community.

Choice of software. You can have a huge choice in what desktop environment you want, KDE and Gnome are the main ones. You get bored? You can switch and even use both.

Desktop effects, AKA Compiz Fusion. Far surpasses Vista's pathetic Aero and requires only that your hardware can use 3D.

Multiprocessing and memory management. Linux kernel is very advanced and is coded to use multiple CPU cores effectively in the OS. Still its app dependant for the rest. Memory management, Linux doesn't swap out memory to disk, so its very responsive running entirely from RAM.

Customise customise customise!! Every thing on a Linux system can be customised. Boot screens, themes, desktop effects, icons and the kernel itself.

Software repositories. Probably the greatest invention to save time. with one command you have a huge data base of 24000 pieces of software installable without opening your web browser. It will download, unpack and install the programs you choose. Unlike Windows where you need to download each program and update them manually.

Security, a major factor. I'm not saying Linux is virus free here. There probably is a few. But the chances of getting one are nil and the chances of one doing damage is VERY unlikely.

There is too much to list, honestly. I've been using Linux since i was 14 years old. (17 now) and im glad my friend coaxed me into it.

Still, some manufacturers don't make Linux drivers which is dissapointing, but the open source community is there! VIA who makes my graphic chipset don't do a Linux driver. Luckily there was an open-source version which i'm using.

At the end of the day, you need to try it and see for yourself!

Hope this helped even if it IS a bit messy. Skymera.

  2. Well no OS can really do more than one os.Linux is simply better because it is free, more secure, open source, built better, runs lighter, more stable, non-microsoft. It supports the open-software world. No more expensive, slow, unstable, virus doomed vista.
