What's so special about tennis shoes?

They're comfortable, but they cost a lot more than they're worth.

If you wear the proper size, tennis shoes are made to provide both cushion and support to your foot.  When your feet are taken care of, the rest of your body, especially your back, is supported, which is healthy.

Also, it's kinda difficult to work out and run in flip flops...

good question, perhaps best answered in marketing. certainly there are certain shoes  created for certain aspects of a sport but keep in mind that years (and i mean YEARS) ago these shoes, now known as tennis shoes and/or sneakers, were known as deck shoes and meant for boaters. as madison ave people would tell you, if they were honest, that a product is for what ever target group that's currently targeted. they would if they were honest. oh, the manufacturers added padding, arch supports, side supports for ankles, etc., but a (deck) shoe is still a shoe. price? well, would you be willing to shell out over a $100 for deck shoes?

I used to be an avid runner and good running shoes were very important.  Good running shoes are comfortable, light, and usually feel good during long abusive runs.  When I started playing tennis, I tried several different shoes as well, and found something similar.  Of course a casual player won't notice much of a difference, and won't appreciate good tennis shoes because they won't push those shoes to the limit.  I can burn through a pair of tennis shoes in 4 months (put a hole in soles).  My favorite shoes are the Adidas Barricade II (I'm on my 5th pair).  I've tried the Babolat Team All Court, the New Balance CT820, the Nike Zoom Vapor V and the Barricade IV.  I'd like to try the New Balance 1003, the Nike Breathe Cage II/III, and the Kswiss Ascendor someday.  If you keep an eye out for good tennis shoes on ebay, you should be able to find many of these "special" shoes at a decent price.  If you are an avid tennis player who moves around a lot, you should try some good tennis shoes, and I'm sure you'll appreciate them more.  There are also some cheaper tennis shoes that might suit your game better, like the Adidas Tirand, that costs about $57, regular priced online.  There are also cheaper New Balance and Wilson shoes online, that were made for tennis.  Different strokes, for different folks... Good shoes are like good tires on your car.  If you're driving an old ugly car, great tires might be a waste of money.
