  2. You will pass thorugh a security scanner and it's the tag on the garment or item that sets it off.

    With clothing, the assistant will remove the tag but on things such as CDs, DVD, etc, it's a sticker with a metal wire underneath which they'll wipe across an incredibly strong magnet to deactivate it.  These magnets are so strong they can wipe all the details from your credit cards too.
