I've heard this term used before, but I'm not quite sure of its meaning

  2. it means the wild remote uninhabited parts a bit like the way Australia has the out back

  3. I am purely guessing, but I would say it is everything in the interior of the state minus the southeast corner.  That is the area that is almost inhabited and only accessible by plane.  Very rugged wilderness out there.
