I've dined in the Augustiner Bräu München, but the foods seemed quite salty....

  1. I really like the Bratwurstglöckl. It's a small place tucked in behind the busy pedestrian zone (Füßgängerzone) near to the Marienplatz, and with a view of the Dom (Frauenkirche). It has a very simple menu, but I go there a lot and the food is always good.

Nürnberger Bratwurstglöckl. Frauenplatz 9, 80331 München

It's most famous for its sausages - I recommend ordering 6, 8 or 10 (6 if you have a normal appetite, 10 if you're really hungry!) with potato salad or sauerkraut if you like it.

The beer is really good too - from Augustiner brewery and tapped from original wooden kegs - a rarity in Munich these days.

The atmosphere is great - even if it looks full when you walk in, don't worry - it's normal to be seated at one of the big tables with other people. Enjoy!

  2. Well if you like Bratwurst and Sauerkraut and Rippchen (Ribs) and Weisswurst or Handkaese with Musik (very stinky pickled Limburger cheese) then you always can go to the Hofbraeuhaus!

  3. the spaten brauhaus is excelent.  i was in munic for a few days a couple months ago, and it was definitely my favorite.  it is between karlsplats and marienplatz and the pedestrian mall, so pretty easy to find.

  4. holy c**p, glad you asked, because I found this little place and it flat-out ruled, looks to be a locals-only type joint, but (traditional) food was great and hugely 'preiswert'.  Also, I wish I would've stolen the beer mug (with tin 'deckel' / cover).  Anyway, it's: Zum Durrnbraeu.  Within walking distance of the Augustiner and Hofbraeuhaus down a side street, give it a shot if you can find it.

  5. I don't know the name of it, but it's on the same street as that touristy American restaurant with the pop music memorabilia (ick!). Just a few doors down from there, if I remember right. A bit pricey, but the food was great!

Alternatively, and this is a bit sad, I admit, there's a Weinerwald across the street from the train station, left side facing down the tracks. Not exactly gourmet, but preiswert German fare in a cozy atmosphere. Everything there is awesome.

I was unimpressed by the Augustiner Bräu too.

  6. The Kaiser Garten in Schwabing is a secret gem, a bit pric, though. Closer to it is the Wirtshaus zur Brez'n, which is world class German food right in Schwabing. Take the U6 to Muenchener Freiheit, up the stairs to the right, then go south one block, it is on the left on the main drag there, you can't miss it.

  7. I prefer the Weisses Bräuhaus just a hop and a skip away from the Marienplatz, lots of local people and not too expensive either!

    hm... droool
