What's the Best way to clean a gas trimmer?

I have a Ryobi 31cc Gas powered trimmer. Over the years it has gotten dirty and gunky around the engine area. Is it safe to just spray some cleaner on it and hose it off? are there precautions I need take? Cleaner type?

I wouldn't spray it with anything. Just use a degreaser cleaner on a cloth and wipe it clean.

get a wet cloff and wipe it gently on the outside first and then wipe it in side then get a dry cloff and wipe it inside and out then let it dry further in the sun

Yep - use some foamy engine cleaner or just some kerosene.
