What's the advantage of G&L MFD Z-Coil Pickups?

Question

I am currently browsing for a guitar for mostly a good clean sound that is also capable of producing a good range of effects (think a Saosin or VersaEmerge type Sound).

I played a G&L Comanche with Z-Coil Pickups. How do those affect sound, and would those be helpful to get that sound I'm looking for?

What are other suggestions for guitar/amps to get those sounds?
