  1. A 5-1 is good if you only have 1 good setter and lets you use more of your hitters, while a 6-2 is good for younger more inexperience players as it lets you use the setter out of the back row and your hitters are the three up front.

  2. 5-1 only has one designated setter and the person who plays opposite them backs them up if need be, but this rarely happens. If you are running a 5-1, the secondary setter hits unless she MUST set.

6-2 has the setter in back row set up the hitters unless she hit the first ball, then the secondary setter (in front row) will set it up. This concept changes when the setter in front row rotates to the back row.

If your team is an experienced team, then you can probably run a 5-1 with no problems. If it's middle school or a JV team that isn't that great, stick with a 6-2.

  3. There are some great answers to this question. I really think the ability to hit the second hit over is a great suprising attack when done right and not too frequently. Also, when you only have one specialized setter then your 5 other players can be more specialized at hitting. Sure a lot of setters can hit, but in most cases not as well as someone that doesn't have to worry about working on their setting game.

  4. Most teams would use the 6-2 in your scenereo.  The number 1 reason for using the 5-1 is for consistancy.  Sets coming from that setter will be similar throughout the year.  Hitters do not have to adjust to two setters.

  5. offensive skills, libero

  6. The 5-1 offense is the format advanced teams use.  There are many advantages in using a 5-1 over a 6-2.

First, skills on advanced teams become very specialized and it's preferable to use one setter with the best setting skills for every set.  If the "teams" that you are referring to are high school teams, they probably want to develope one of the players into a specialized setter and the other into a hitter.

Having a front row setter for half of the rotations gives the setter the ability to attack the ball on the second hit or dink over the net.  This extra offensive option makes playing defense against the team more difficult.  This isn't possible 6-2 since setters are always in the back row.

The setter is like the quarter back - the one who runs all the plays.  It makes sense to pick the best leader and strategist to lead the team.  In 6-2, two setters have to coordinate w/ the coach and each other, making the whole process complicated.

The sets are consistent for all the hitters.

  7. What everyone said about skill and specialization is right on.  Another reason that the 5-1 is so popular is that it places more emphasis on the opposite hitter.  At the international level, the opposite hitter is often the best hitter because he/she hits in every rotation.  When the opposite is in the back row (setter front), teams usually keep him/her "hidden" in the serve receive, so that he/she can make a full approach and hit a "D."  In fact, 90% of all back-row attacks are probably made by the opposite.

Volleyball is a sport of rhythm and momentum--instead of setting for 3 rotations and then hitting for 3 rotations as the opposite would in a 5-2, he/she hits all the time.  Changing setters/hitters every three rotations destroys the rhythm of the game and any momentum your team may have built up.  I remember how much Coach McGown at BYU used to hate the 6-2.

One of the most dominant hitters in the world today is Serbia & Montenegro's opposite hitter Ivan Miljkovic.  Anyone who has seen him play will know what I mean.

  8. A 5-1 is better because there is only one setter and it will be easier because you know how the person sets and you don't have to adjust as much.

  9. a 5-1 is better because the setter focuses more on setting hroughout the whole game. It is less confusing for the team to know who is setting and who to pass it to. plus you gain one extra hitter who can only focus on hitting and blocking instead of setting.

  10. Consistency I guess.

  11. 5-1 is a lot better for a set play. but the setter needs to in his excellent shape since he'll be handling all the actions.
