I've been hearing so much positive press about prefab garages so I figured I'd ask if they are worth the money.

  1. I have one...was definitely worth it and saved alot of time. Biggest advantage is the time it saves you.

  2. You did not specify whether you wanted a wooden or metal structure? Either way it boils down to the manufacturer being "Tooled" up to build them in an assembly line fashion, faster,  and cheaper by volume. Strength is typically derived by using "Engineered" type trusses, modern glues and ring shank nails in the wooden ones. They usually come with thinner walls, 1.5" x 3" studs which are dimensionally smaller than the framing lumber you would typically find a a lumber yard, save a dime here, save a dime there...the margin is slim on these things.

Now the Prefab metal garages, they are fantastic. Usually a "Bolt" together affair that has a rust and weatherproof finish "Baked" or cured on the skin. Pour a slab or footer and bolt it together! I have some farm buildings that are "Pre-Fab" metal and there is nothing "Cheap" about them. The old addage appies, you get what you pay for...You may be restricted if you are in a neighborhood that has covenants or codes restricting the type and style of structure you can build. If it were me going to put up a "Free Standing" "Garage" I would pour a reinforced 4" slab with a 10-12" base of compacted gravel, bring in all utilities and services under the slab. Now you have a SHOP/Garage that your great grandchildren will be playing marbles in. Unless its a "Short Term" thing, forget the prefab wooden structures.

If you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly.

You will never have regrets if you buy the "Best" first...

    Enjoy!

  3. Best advantage is that they're cheap, and they look it too.  Make sure you don't have any HOA that prohibits these horrible looking structure.

  4. The Q-model prefab garage system is exceptional for its lack of interior beams and poles, making it obstruction-free and perfect for storing cars, motorcycles, and even aircraft. It is offered in twenty to an astounding one hundred feet in width, with no restrictions on its length.

If you are in the market for a larger prefab garage system, the American Steel Span S or P-models may be your best choice.

The S model, with high sides and an arch span design providing enough support to remove the need for interior beams and poles, is available in unlimited sizes and widths of between fourteen and thirty feet.

The P-model has the identical high sides and is offered in the same widths and unlimited length.
