What's the alternative?

Question

I'm always hearing people say:

"... but what's the alternative - there isn't an alternative..."

and

"... the alternative is much worse..."

So we have cars & power stations causing pollution, which is probably causing global warming... we have to endure endless speeches by politicians who do very little, constant price rises, long working hours, heavy taxes, half the world starving...

If we could end the confusion about this, wouldn't that make a change?

Low cost = made by cheap labor

Super strong = consumes a lot of materials

Maintenance free = impossible

Mobile = requires a lot of energy to move, especially if it is made out of "super strong" i.e. heavy material

While the book goes at length to describe problems with every aspect of life, it really needs to be easier to find a concise summary of this housing alternative, without having to wade through a poorly formatted diatribe.

I read a few pages of that link.  The authors are just about as out of touch with reality as a person can be.  It reads like it's written by idealistic, suburban, white high school kids who have never done anything so bourgeois as to earn a paycheck.  It has a dreamland, fairytale narrative where all would be well and perfect for humans, were it not for all of the humans.

Beg your pardon, but I'm due back on planet Earth.

The alternative is to stop burning petrochemicals.  Sometime ago people were speaking about acid rain.  Well it does not take as rocket scientist to figure out where the runoff f goes, into the oceans.  We are, though the use of hydrocarbons turning the worlds oceans into a fizzy drink.  What has happened to the electric car, well the energy companies would lose sales which in turn affect the government in come.  this is the reason change is soo hard.  And then there are the stories of the UFOs.  Is there technology about these craft that could improve the health of the planetary system?   Was the Craft that reportedly crashed at Roswell sent as a gift?  Has someone decided  that it was a business opportunity?  I could continue. But the asker is not the person i should be earbashing,  it's my country's government i hound, and if more people want the eletric car they should be doing the same.

If Congress really wanted to reduce global warming, they'd limit their speeches to 10 minutes each, stop putting out all those stupid reelection campaign posters and letters, and limit the printing on the Congressional records which nobody reads anyway.  All of which, except the Congressmen themselves, cause our landfills to overflow.

Does it really matter what the alternatives are?  Congress has never done anything much re the environment except give it lip service and they probably never will -- its too costly & god forbid we should require the corporations to take more responsibility.

As for your other concerns, someone else will have to address them.

Thank you for posting this link. I see by your Blog that you live somewhere in the UK.

I'm not sure about your country but perhaps it is not yet owned by Saudi Arabia (and oil corporations) as is the United States.

There is a clear reason that the first hybrid cars were Japanese. American manufacturers only followed along in order to not lose even more of the American car market.

While Toyota Prius salesl have now topped over one million, the US starts to make hybrid SUVs. I wonder if 50 MPG or 24 MPG is better for the environment (and consumer).

Likewise, many of the American cars are not Extra Low Emission Vehicles (as are most of the Japanese models).

Why isn't solar power used on these vehicles to run some of the electrical (lights, radio, etc.)? Could it be that oil companies own the largest stake in Solar Power companies?

Why don't people buy new hydrogen cars? Could it be that no GAS stations sell this product (and haven't asked about adding it).

It's not that better alternative aren't available and that consumers don't want them or wouldn't use them it's simply that those in power don't want anything to change.
