    The national household median income is on the order of $44,000

    But if middle class means at least a 2-year college degree, then the number goes up to $52,000 (for households with a 2-year degree but not a 4-year degree.)  Others would say that that would still be "lower middle class"

    As for the difference between single and household, the above were for  median household (mix of single and multiple workers).

    "According to Leonard Beeghley a household income of roughly $95,000 would be typical of a dual-earner middle class household while $60,000 would be typical of a dual-earner working class household and $18,000 typical for an impoverished household."
