The F-22 is the first Multi Role Actual "Stealth Fighter". The F-117 Nighthawk was called a Stealth Fighter, but it really wasn't. It had no Air to Air Capabilities. It was in fact a small bomber. The F-22 on the other hand is a  Multi Role ( Which means Fighter/Bomber/Escort) All Weather, Day or Night Aircraft.

There are a few other new fighters out there that are great but cannot touch what the F-22 has to offer. The Eurofighter Typhoon and the Russian SU-47 are decent 4th Generation Fighters, but cannot match the F-22 .

The F-22 has the advantage in Radar, Weapons, Weapon Jamming, Range, Combat Range, Speed, Combat Ceiling (How high up it can fly on a normal mission), Max Ceiling, and of course Stealth.

Now the Eurofighter and SU-47 are extremely Agile Aircraft, however the F-22 can pretty much match whatever is thrown at them when it comes to Agility, especially with the Thrust Vectoring Engines. Not to mention that the United States Air Force trains they're Pilots more often and more Intense for every given situation, than any other country in the world.

Because in the end you can have the best Fighter in the World like the F-22 but if the Pilot that Flies it isn't worth a d**n, there is not much the plane can do other than Stealth to help it win in Air to Air or Air to Ground Combat.

But given it's advantages and the Best Pilots in the World, the F-22 wins, hands down.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that other Nations do not have Great Pilots, but the United States has more. You combine a larger number of Great Pilots with the a larger number of the best Aircraft and what you end up with is the Best Air Force in the world.

Also the F-35 Doesn't even come close to the F-22's Capabilities. I personally think it is a huge waste of our Tax Dollars. More F-22's can be built, and even modified for Carrier Capability. Everyone is complaining about the Huge Cost of the F-22 which right now is about 118 Million per aircraft. But they expect that is going to be cut in half at least in the next couple years. Brand new aircraft are always outrageously more expensive until higher number of orders start rolling in.

The F-35 Does not have the Range, Combat Range, Speed, Complete Stealth, and cannot carry as many weapons or a payload as the F-22. It really is the Navy and Marines aircraft because of it's ability to land on carriers and have a swept wing design. The Airforce is ordering them as well as a replacement for the F-16's. But I seriously believe that they could have put that money into ordering more F-22's which would have brought the cost per aircraft down to about what the F-35 is, and been able to Convert the F-22 into a Carrier Version.

Actuallly its the JSF that was codeveloped by NATO.  But new stuff is always in the design stage.

It all depends on what role you want.  air-air (F-23), air to ground (F-18e,f,g), tank killer (A-10, AV-8b) most expensive fighter (F-22)  best fighter bomber (F-16a,b),  etc
