  1. For AntiVirus and Protection:

My top suggestion is to use avast! AntiVirus, which is 100% free for home/personal use. All you have to do is download and install, then activate it (free!) following instructions the software should give you.

    http://www.avast.com/

It's not only a virus scanner, but it's a very thorough active-protection agent, which watches all connections on your computer to make sure nothing bad is getting around, and if it catches anything, it stops it and warns you!

Another team favorite is AVG AntiVirus.

    http://free.avg.com/

It's another free AntiVirus software, but my preference is for avast!

    For Spyware/Malware Removal and Protection:

Download and install Spybot Search and Destroy:

    http://filehippo.com/download_spybot_sea...

    and download and install SUPERAntiSpyware:

    http://filehippo.com/download_superantis...

Both are very good spyware protection software that will keep your computer safe from various trojans, tracking cookies, and other forms of miserable malware that your computer may pick up from even the most basic web surfing habits.

And remember, all of these are not only free, but just as good (if not better!) than BitDefender and other top name security suites.

  2. Norton Internet Security 2008....

A lot better than last year's version....doesn't slow down your system as much....much faster scans....great virus protection, spyware, adware, instant messaging protection, bi-directional firewall, etc.

Been using it for 7 years updating each year to the new version with no problems.

    highly recommended..

  3. Well, it depends on three things:  Your computers muscle, your browsing habits, and your budget.

No matter what, you should definitly have something, though.

If you have a nice, new computer with a dual core processor and 1-2 GB of RAM, I would generally go for Norton or McAffe.  Otherwise, don't go for theese, especially norton.  While Norton is the most powerful protection avalible, since it has a lot of market share, it's a big target for malaware writers.  You won't get any viruses or spyware if you've got it, though, but It is just so large and complex that it may just not be worth it.

McAffe and Trend Micro Internet security are two intermediate options.  While I've never owned a PC running them, I've seen them in action, and theyre definitly good choices.  I don't know about too many others, though.

The program I run was personally recommended to me by someone at micro center.  It's called ESET NOD32 Antivirus.  It's a bit of a muthful, but It does it's job well on my PC.  This program is tuned for slightly slower, older computers like mine.  I don't know how much good it will do you if you downlo recklessly, but It's served me well.

In order of price, comprehensivness, and system requirements, are the four listed above (from highest to lowest.)  If you download recklessly, and have money to blow, go for norton.  If you're careful about everything you download, you're still not safe, but you run a slower computer, and you don't want to spend too much money, ESET NOD32 is cheap and gets you what you need.  McAffe and Trend Micro would probablly be better intermediate, general poulation choices.
