Question:

What's the best antacid out there? I've tried plenty of antacids but a lot of times, they just don't work.

I'm just speaking of antacids that you could carry in your pocket...if you're on the go. I've tried several antacids --- Tums, Rollaids, Alka Seltzer, Mylanta (maybe), Pepcid AC, Equate, etc., etc. Some of these work. Some don't.

Just wondering which ones you'd recommend.

Thanks.

  1. I think pepcid is the best--lasts the longest.  question should be, have you seen a doc for needing so much antacids?

  2. If buying OTC, I personally would recommend Zantac, they're wonderful without being too potent. I'm actually pregnant now, and have been having terrible heartburn, and they say they most potent thing that I can take is Zantac. I, obviously, take the low-dose the 75 mg. dose about twice a day, once right after breakfast, and one right before dinner. You may want to go up in dosage, but this should cover you all day. But remember to take it like a medication, most of the time, if you wait until you feel heartburn, you'll end up waiting about 10-15 min. before it kicks in, but if you can remember to take it ahead of time, it'll save you in the end, and you'll never feel a bit of discomfort. I hope this helps...

  3. Gaviscon...they really help me!

  4. You could give Oval80 a try but it could be that since none of these are working for you, that it could be another health related issue and not strictly acid reflux.

I would strongly recommend you consult with your doctor.

If it is acid reflux, there are some things you could do to help reduce the pain in the mean time. Start with eliminated all spicy and acidic foods and alcohol. Make sure have at least 3 hours minimum without eating before going to bed.

    I hope that helps. :)

  5. I never take anything unnatural.

Please respect your body and stop taking pills.

Try to understand your body and never use any pills, unless seriously needed.

Use natural ingredients and don't eat the foods that give you problems.

In most cases (if you are not underweight) skip a meal or two.

It will not hurt you if you don't eat lunch or dinner.

Most digetstive problems can be cured but reducing your intake.

Do not eat fast food unless severely desired.

    Good luck

  6. I'm partial to Maalox chewable (the chalky ones, not the new gummy ones) - they work for me, and I actually like the taste of the berry ones :D

But if your heartburn is chronic, you should talk to you doctor -- you might be suffering a condition called GERD, or acid reflux.

FYI - Products like Pepcid AC and Zantac are "acid blockers", not "antacids" -- they act to reduce the amount of acid released by your stomach - which doesn't do much good if you're already suffering heartburn

"Antacids" are high pH (alkaline) substances that work by literally neutralizing the stomach acid that's in your stomach and esophagus (alkaline and acid cancel each other out)

  7. My personal favorite is tagament, or pepcid ac... :-)

  8. My sister swears by TUMS. She takes one of every color - I think that's four - every time. You can buy them now with added calcium as well.

But it may be that you need to just change your diet. Start by cutting out spicy foods or raw vegetables, even beans and sodas. Or start by adding more wheat products. They will help you digest better.
