  1. I lived in Thorndon Wellington, which is really close to the downtown area. I actually lived right across the street from the Boticanic Gardens (wonderful place to visit if you enjoy a nice walk, and beautiful flowers and tropical plants!!).

Thorndon has everything that you'd need-walking distance to the grocery store, restaurants, pubs, and I walked to work (downtown on Lampton Quay) in about 25 minutes.

It's a relatively quiet area, and didn't really seem to be a family neighbourhood (I could be wrong though).

One thing to be aware of when looking for housing in Wellington-look at where the windows are facing (in relation to where the sun rises and sets) I was told by my roommates that it is difficult to find housing in Welly that has sun shining on/in it (therefore a lot of the houses are quite dark and cold).

  2. I have to admit Wainui isn't the best, but it's not too bad. It's more for the elderly and poorer people.

Harbour View and Eastbourne are nice places

  3. Not Porirua and not Wainuiomata.

  4. Nice= Oriental Bay, Seatoun, Khandalla, Miramar, Strathmore Park, Woodridge, Crofton Downs etc.

Not Nice= Tawa, Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata.

I have friens who live in the nice areas so I don't know many not nice areas!

  5. Wellington is an neat place to live.  Have lived here for most of my life.  Porirua is like any subsurb in any large city, has poorer areas, and wealthy areas.

I live out past Porirua in a place called Plimmerton about 10 minutes north of Porirua.  Where did you get we eat porridge??????

We live right on the beach and have a lovely community with restaurant, gallery, local shops, primary school etc, and is alway a few degrees warmer than Wellington City.

    Fantastic place.

  6. Wellington is a great area to live in. The nicest parts of Wellington are Island Bay and Lyall Bay as they are still close to town but less crowded and have magnificant beachs. Porirua is not very flash and many people are unemployed although Porirua does have alot of good shops. Mt Victoria gives fabulous views of the harbour although house prices are above 1 million dollars for an apartment.

  7. hehe funny

i would actually say Tawa is a nice area!!

    very family orientated etc

not my cup of tea as i like busier areas but considering its proximity to wellington perfectly fine!

What is a nice area to some is not nice to others.

Depends what you like. If you are wanting big old homes  then the areas close to the city are best. If you are wanting big new homes you should go further out into the burbs. If you want funky and alternative – perhaps Aro Valley (traditional alt. area) or family area near to the city, Brooklyn or Karori.

As for Porirua, well I wouldn’t chose to live in parts (Waitangarua, Cannons Creek….Porirua East) but to be honest, I think on  a sunny day the harbour is lovely. Titahi Bay is great to surf at. There are also quite a few places further out such as plimmerton, pukerua bay, Whitby, Pauatahanui etc etc that are truly lovely.

The one problem I would have with Porirua as a whole is that the cities rates are really high!
