What's the best book for learning vocabulary?

I'm looking for a cheap (less than $50) reference book that teaches middle school or higher level vocabulary. I'm looking of books more of teaching common, advanced words such as those used in books rather than "1000 SAT Words You Must Know!". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
