  1. You want to be dangerous and powerful.

NO!!! thats a bad little geek!!!! Go back to playing warcraft.

  2. You can learn by buying a book .Here is how you do it.Buy any book on martial arts any thick hard cover will do carry it with you at all times when attacked beat your attacker over the head with it.It will stop a knife or low caliber bullet also so you are all set up for knife and gun defense also.

Got anymore stupid questions?I have plenty stupid answers for them if you have.

katana you can't explain it to these people or teach them anything .Let them go ahead and do it maybe after they get their *** handed to them hopefully not crippled maimed or killed they will see the light.

  3. Send me just $999.99 and I will send you your first written manuscript that will teach you how to knock out 10 men with only one punch, dodge bullets so fast that the bullet won't see you move and kiai so hard you will knock over brick walls from 40 feet away.  Then once a month for only another $999.99 I will send you the next manuscript that will teach you more amazing martial feats!

Seriously though.  No there is not a book that will do what you ask.  The books out there are meant to be supplementary to the professional training you receive from a qualified instructor.

There are some methods of distance training that involve video exchanges and some are better than others, however, the only reason to use these is if you are unable to attend and train in person.

  4. You can't learn from a book. It's been stated many times here, to the same question. If you want to become that you need a LIVE instructor.

  5. Can you teach yourself martial arts from books and videos? Yes.

Can you teach yourself correct and effective martial arts that will actually work for self defense? No way in h***. That should be commen sense. I mean can you learn to do open heart surgery succesfully by watching a video or reading a book?

You may be able to imitate the moves,  but without feedback and correction from a good qualified instructor, who will teach you right and ground you in good fundimentals and basics, all you will be doing is punching air  and if you ever have to use it to defend yourself, you will be in deep s***.

How can you think that you will be able to learn how to fight from watching DVD's and books, that cannot include many of the littlle things that are needed, and must be done correctly, in order to work? In order to learn a martial art correctly you need the following:

    1) A good instructor who has knowledge of the techniques, and can give you feedback on what you are doing wrong.

    2) Resisting opponents to train with that can help you learn to perform the moves correctly under pressure.

    3) A school that will train realisticly, making you perform under some type of stress, so that when it really is needed on teh street you will not freeze.

So long story short, yes you can learn to imitate the moves on your own,  and look cool,  but do not in any way expect them to get you anything but hurt if you ever have to do them for self defense.

Hey I have an idea, lets train our soldiers via video and books. That would save a ton of money on housing and feeding. We could send them like DVD's. One for each week of basic training, including a rifle, ammo, and uniform. Then once they complete that, we can send them DVD's on there MOS(Military Occupational Specialty) such as "How to fly an Apache Helicoptor made easy". D*** we been doing things the wrong way all this time.

Now would you feel confident relying on soldiers who were trained this way?

  6. Yeah, you can't learn any type of martial art by reading it in a book. You need an instructor to help you learn by visualizing and practicing.

  7. there are lots of great books that will teach you alot.

you can learn alot from books and videos. people who say otherwise should open their minds to new ways of learning. you can learn to shoot a basketball from books. you can learn trigonometry from books. why not some simple self defense techniques? ..if they were so worthless...why would everyone write them?

some of the deepest kept secrets of martial arts are contained in what?....books.

of course you need correspondance with the instructor to make real long term progress. but even then it can be done via video.

the important thing is the correspondance..and testing with a real instructor.

the bottom line as one insructor tole me is...."can you pass the test"? ...it doesnt really matter where or how you learn it. some of the greatest martial artists in the world have home study or long distance training programs. the correspondance is the key to success. you have to have someone who can correct your mistakes and give you tips and pointers.

can you learn an entire art from a book? no. ...can you learn alot from a book? yes, most definately.

can you learn an entire art from a home study course? if it is designed properly from the ground up for just that purpose then....YES! ..it is not for everyone though.

but some very well respected people in the martial arts community have told me themselves that some of their long distance students actually learn better, and progress faster than their regular students.

  8. A book can only show u so much, the best is to join a dojo and learn from there. There is no best specific style , only experience in different styles will help u combine them to form an effective style to combat different styles.

  9. Agreed. Book bad. Live instructor good.

That being said, supplementing your live instruction with good reading on the philosophies and histories of combat styles will help you.

  10. Take a look at this list of books, all of which have many positive reviews on Amazon.com:

I can recommend "Attack Proof" as a great book for unorthodox but very effective techniques and training.  But if you are a total beginner, it'll be difficult to learn solely from a book unless you have conditioning, reflexes, balance, and kinesthetics from another activity (e.g. boxing, gymnastics, modern dance).  So if you're serious about learning, visit a variety of schools in your area until you find one that suits you.

Disclaimer: I developed ZoomGet and it was meant to help answer exactly this type of question.

  11. none, you don't learn from a book you most learn by doing. any think you do most be learned
