Question:

What's the best car rental service if I'm traveling from Milan to Rome?

I'd like to be able to drop of the car in Rome or somewhere nearby, and it should be good value for money.

I know about the international companies like Europcar, Hertz and Avis -- but which are the best/cheapest, or are there any local ones that are better?

  1. Try www.1800flyeurope.com.  I've rented from them a number of times in Italy.  They don't charge extra for one-way rentals.  Your rental will include full, no-deductible insurance.  And, you'll be charged in US dollars rather than Euros so you won't have to pay your credit card's foreign transaction fees.

As for local companies, you can try www.easycaritalia.it.  I have found that they have the best rates for short, 1-3 day rentals.  But, they do charge extra for one-way rentals.

    Good luck!

  2. I live in Italy and we rent cars all the time we always rent from Europcar which is cheap, clean they speak english when you pick up the car and if you need assistances on the road. I know that I've heard lots of people having problems with Hertz and AVIs here!! If you want you can drop the car off and the Rome airport either one if thats easy or they have some places in Rome itself They have 11 locations in Rome to drop them off two are the airport. There website is http://www.europcar.com. Two points though you need to know how to drive stick because its very very hard to get automatic from any car rental place here since most Europeans drive stick. Cars are much smaller here too so if you have lugguage don't get a small car with 2 doors. and small cars with 4 doors can still be hard my advise is a med size or large if you are going with 4 or more people get a 7 person van even. You will need the space I know from experiece.
