  1. The cheapeast way is to access from an Internet Point. The prices change from place to place. Eg. downtown is usually more expensive. The cheapest Internet points cost about 1 euro- 1.50 euro per hour.

You can also pay for 15 minutes.

All libraries have internet access but you have to be a member and pay a small extra fee. The number of hours per week is usually strictly limited and fractions of hour are not allowed. Sometimes you have also to prove that you are using the Internet for cultural/study purposes. Some sites are also banned.

Hotels have access (and you have to pay); but sometimes wireless access is free.

In many of the biggest cities there are free wireless "hot-spots" you may ask to the local tourist information office.

For instance, in Rome, there are several hot-spots in  the main parks, Villa Borghese, Villa Torlonia etc.

But you must bring your own laptop!

If I were you I would go to an internet point.

  2. I live in northen italy and have had the same problem.  We have a big library where you can use their computers and internet for an hour for free.  You must have a library card but that is also free.  I have tried bringing my laptop to this "hotspot" but it wont connect.  Im not sure how to access the internet from my own computer.  I think if the place your staying at has a phone you can buy a more secure and lasting connection but i havent figured out how to do that yet.

  4. Most hotels have internet connections.  You pay by the minute, but it's not bad really.

  5. Italiens dont understand the word cheap. They milk their tourist for everything they have. I was there a couple weeks ago in both venice and rome and did not come accross any libraries. Internet cafes were charging 5 euros for half an hour!

    I wish you luck!

  6. There are no public libraries as we know them in Italy. Italy has the lowest rate of "readers" in Europe.

  7. Cafes the last time i went. You might want to check the most recent lonely planet travel guide for the best places to go.
