I'm only going to dye 5 for me and 5 for my girlfriend. What's the best kind to get? And of the brand or kind, is the powder or the liquid better? Thanks.

  1. Whatever you do, avoid Rit dye for tie-dyeing cotton. The colors are dull, the dye fades quickly, and it bleeds in the laundry, ruining anything else you wash it with. Rit dye is a hot water dye and cannot be used with the squirt bottle technique that makes modern multi-color tie-dye so easy.

The best dyes for tie-dyeing are fiber reactive dyes, such as Procion. You can't buy these at the grocery store, but it's easy to buy a good kit that contains these dyes. Go to any crafts store or sewing store and look for a tie-dye kit made by Jacquard, Dylon, Tulip, or Rainbow Rock. These dyes are easy to use because they are set with washing soda (included in the kit), instead of with boiling water, and the dye stays bright on your clothes for years, even if you wash them in hot water.

The Jacquard tie-dye kits will dye about 15 t-shirts, so they are perfect for your project. They cost about $13, so it's not a big investment. Be sure to dye only 100% cotton shirts which are NOT stain-resistant (the stain resistant coatings on some t-shirts will resist dye, too). Sometimes you can find these great kits in Walmart or Target, but if they don't have them, your local crafts store will.

  2. Hey bro here is what i found; ive never tye dyed anything but if you dont want to buy a kit here is a home made tye dye for kids should be easy

  3. Normally when I tie-dye my shirts I use a brand called Rit . I prefer to get one of their powder forms (as they also have a liguids) and mix the powder with water as directed and put this mixture into a bottle with a nozzle on the end.  I'd reccomend figuring out what colors you plan on using ahead of time as Rit comes in boxes of seperate color with generally enough for 3 tees depending on your "design" (another thing to consider).

    Edit:

There is a specific Rit dye kit that comes four colors to a box  that is "specifically" meant for cold water use and the nozzle technique as the kit includes the squirt bottle (along with about 50 rubber bands). If you follow the directions in the box you shouldn't have any bleeding as hoseing the shirts after they've dried for 6 hours (In the instructions) will remove any excess color that would otherwise come off in the wash. There is also an extra packet of the powder (in each color) included totaling about 6 t- shirts that could be colored. As for the colors being dull like Paula B suggested use 100% cotton t-shirts without any coatings over them for protection from stains.
