What's the best (easiest, cheapest, most reliable) way to get from the Rome airport to the Civitavecchia docks?

My husband and I are taking an Italian cruise in September. We've cruised before, but always with a large group. This is the first time we'll be travelling solo. We have heard that the cruise line will arrange for a shuttle pick-up at the airport for us, or we could go with a private shuttle service. But this seems very pricey--nearly $170+ for the two of us, and I don't think it's that far away. We have heard that you can take the train from the Airport (Fumicino) into Rome, then take another train out to Civitavecchia, where the docks are located. This sounds a little complicated, but less expensive, although we've also heard that the Termini train stations are a little dangerous or unpleasant. We have plenty of time, assuming the flight arrives on time, as we get in early in the a.m. and are not able to board the ship until early afternoon, at the earliest. What have other travellers in a similar situation done? What has seemed to work out the best? Thanks for any advice!

  1. from the civitavechhia dock to rome u can take a tour bus...its around 20 euro per person

  2. i truly think that what you heard is the best way possible. local transport in general i find it not so good. i wouldn't say a stupid think but i don't think there're other better ways.

  3. The easiest, cheapest and most reliable way is by train.

Take the first train from the airport to Roma Ostiense.

Take your second train from Roma Ostiense to Civitavecchia.

Unfortunately I don't know at what time you land on the airport otherwise I might check the departures for you.

As example I suppose you land at 9:00 a.m.

    Fiumicino Aeroporto dep.9:27

    Roma Ostiense arr.9:55

    Roma Ostiense dep.10:18

    Civitavecchia arr.11:15

Price is euro 8,70 for person (children are discounted).

Roma Ostiense is a secondary train station in the city, far from the crowd of Roma Termini.

    Make by yourself checking :

You can even puchase your ticket in advance via internet!

  4. You have plenty of time and can save yourself alot of money.

There will be trains from the airport to Romes main station and trains from there to the docks.

Make sure you have a contact number for someone in case you get stuck. From the main termnal its only about an hour to Civitavecchia. You will need to find the platform the train leaves from and its a little walk at the other end to get to the docks.

Get a train to Roma Termini (main train station) then a train to Civitavecchia Station. Local trains go every 20 minutes. The cost from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia is about 4euro ea on the normal trains. (for scheduling and journey times as well as prices: www.trenitalia.com, click english option top left).

From Civitavecchia you come out of the station, turn right and head along the esplanade to you get to the ferry terminal at the end. Its about 500m plus so have wheels on the suitcase.

    Easy!!

  5. Walk..............

  6. Well, if you're looking for an inexpensive way to get back and forth, the train is your best bet. Unfortunately even the Taxi's rip you off, although you could always ask how much it costs before getting into the taxi. The train station in Rome is not dangerous. Just be smart, and just keep your personal items close to you at all times. There will be random locals that see you're a tourist, and try to "help". Avoid them, b/c they will either try to pick pocket you, or are looking for a tip.
