I want something that's thick enough, but not too expensive.

  1. Denim or Broadcloth (heavy poly-cotton).

Denim might be a bit pricey but broadcloth is around $8 a yard. Or canvas, duck cloth. Check out your local fabric stores for what fabrics they carry and their prices.

  2. sailcloth

  3. A poly/cotton broadcloth is what I use for aprons.

The fabrics sold for making patchwork quilts is ideal. I torture myself sometimes, trying to choose between a gazillion beautiful prints!

    A word of warning:

The fabrics sold in shops specializing in quilting supplies can be shockingly expensive.  I find that even Wal Mart, though, has a good selection of appropriate fabrics.

  4. we made aprons in grade school...all you have to do is buy a bath towel that you like, and some bias tape.  then, you cut two curves from the top part of the towel at the corners for your arms...leaving a few inches in the middle.  then, fold that part down about two inches and sew it across.  then, take your bias tape, and sew it to the curves, up one side and down the other, and leave enough at the top to make a loop for your head to go thru, and enough on the bottom ends to tie it behind your back.  sure wish i could post a picture, cuz i don't know if i explained it well enough!

  5. Believe or not, I went to the thrift and found a tablecloth that was sturdy and inexpensive fabric to make an apron.
