She's only 2 years old and she recently got diagnosed with anemia. She has been eating quite often but yet she is still painfullu thin. Whats is the best foods to feed her (wet and dry)? Right now I'm feeding her science diet dry and wet but I've recently read that its pretty much by-products and c**p we wouldn't eat that's in it. We're also experimenting with Max Cat wet foods, and it seems like she likes it, is this worse then science diet??

  1. why is she anaemic:you must ask the vet!

hookworms and some types of worms can make a cat severely anaemic.Make sure, you ask the vet to deworm your cat.Science diet is awful.I'm not impressed with Nutro Max either.Check:Orijen, Wellness, or Wellness core.Natural Balance is good.Remember, cats are meat eaters:maybe supplement her with finely chopped chicken hearts or gizzards(its sold in supermarkets).Don't give too much in the beginning, may cause diarrhea.

Find out, why is she anaemic!Buy better food!

Science Diet is c**p.. for sure.. and Max isnt any better.. it is Nutro's lowest line...

you didnt say what country you are in so its hard to reccommend other suggestions.. I am in Canada, and like NUTRAM or ACANA...

please read the link so you can decide for yourself!

check livestock feed stores.. that is where I buy my food at because its cheaper by $3-6

  3. First of all, how did your vet go about diagnosing the anemia? The treatment plan for anemia generally starts by figuring out the cause of the anemia. Food is definitely a way to help boost the body to produce the red blood cells needed to replenish what has been lost, but ultimately your vet needs to make a judgement call as to what food to feed that will help, not hinder, other treatment options. Some reasons for anemia, such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) can cause liver and kidney damage, which may be exacerbated by feeding a food that kitty can't digest and metabolize properly. Other treatment options should be made clear to you by your vet, such as transfusions, immunosupressives like steroids or cyclosporine, even anti-anemia drugs for humans.

In short? Check with your vet! If you aren't happy with the answer your vet gives you, go to a different vet.

  4. your vet should have told you what to do! Get chicken livers,(fresh) low fat ground beef. boil these, drain . Add to the morning food. Look at the first ingredient on the bag, If it's not meat..look to another food! Purina one is what my vet want's my babies to eat.

  5. I agree with Lovyouo, but have a couple of things to add. First of all did the vet give you any reason why the cat is anemic. Most of cats are not anemic. Does he have worms? Also ask your vet for a iron supplement with vitamins. This will help with the anemia and build kitty up.

  6. Did your vet not suggest a good cat food or put her on some vitamin supplements?

We've purchased Hills from our vet for years now and all our feral tamed/rescue and stray rescue cats have thrived on it.

I've read allot of negative things about cat food brands but Yahoo is the first place I've ever seen people claim that Hills is garbage.  Makes me curious.

We had a cat that was anemic and he continued to eat just his Hills and while he never gained much weight, he was a healthy weight.  That was all we did for him except to take him to the vet a little more often in a years time for re-checks.

    Wish I could offer more.

  7. have you tried kangaroo meat? this is assuming that she is aneamic from iron deficiency

  8. Your cat needs to be on the best possible nutrition to support her system.

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It's completely species inappropriate.

All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don't need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol' house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, chronic constipation,  urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals, run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall,  wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats’ digestive system won't be so sensitive and you won't have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.
