  1. openSUSE is the best, its the most polished, easy to use and stable as well as feature rich

    http://en.opensuse.org

  2. Linux distributions are de facto when considering free OS's. There's also Sun Solaris but not sure how popular that is.

  3. Linux is great!

  4. I don't know the best one, but the worst at this time is Microsoft Vista.

There are so many linux based operating systems, I could fill this page with names of them.

I have used Suse 9.0, Ubuntu and Kubuntu 7.10.

Kubuntu looks just like Windows, so it is a bit easier for new users to find things in the program, but it is just Ubuntu with a different desktop.

I use dual boot, Windows XP Home and Kubuntu.

Note: Linux based systems are great, very secure, basically no viruses, spyware and or malware, but they do not have the support the Microsoft has. They are getting better over time. The support base is growing, but don't expect to be able to run down to your local computer depot and buy a game, or some software for for the Linux based system as of this time.

Although I have dual boot, I must admit, I used Windows XP more than Kubuntu, maybe because I am more familar with it, or it just seems normal to me, but I do also like using the Linux based systems when just surfing the internet, or downloading files, as those operating systems are a lot more secure.

  5. Mandrake

  6. Linux is unquestionably the best and most widely used Desktop free OS. There are many distributions, but the most popular and easy to use ones are Ubuntu and openSUSE. You can find the ISOs to burn to a CD/DVD at their sites, http://www.ubuntu.com/ and http://www.opensuse.org/, as well as documentation.

  7. This is becoming a hotly contested subject between Linux users, so I am going to sit on the fence and recommend a few. Here are some Linux distros. worth considering

    Mandriva 2008.1 Spring http://www.mandriva.com/

    SimplyMEPIS 7.0 http://www.mepis.org/

    Ubuntu 7.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ (My Preference)

    Ubuntu 8.04.1 http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/

    Linux Mint 5.0 http://www.linuxmint.com/

All are easy to install and easy to use.
