  1. There are 3 factors when it comes to upgrading the video card:

    1. Power Supply Wattage

    2. BIOS date

    3. Type of slot (PCI-E is the best)

Note those, the 8800 GT will require at least a 500 Watt power supply to work. Just hope that your power supply is standard size. I am really positive that your wattage is too low. Look into new Power Supplies, they are very simple to replace.

That is all that I can tell you based on the info you said. I will need more specs of your pc if you want an exact result.

I suggest opening your case to see if you have the correct slot type and the wattage of your power supply.

  2. the machine has 1 pci-e slot so that aspect's fine. you need to find out what your power supply is rated at. Low end cards will just plug into the pci-e port. More powerful cards need additional power from one of the rails of the pwer supply. A 450 watt will run most cards. Very high end cards will need more power.

PSU upgrade is relatively inexpensive and not hard to do so if you need one its just a matter of factoring that into your upgrade cost.

As fast as gpu's go, it really depends on what you want to play and what your budget is

  3. 8800GT for high end gaming and a 8800GTX for high/extreme graphics.

  4. Your computer will take a graphics card with a PCI-EXPRESS (also called PCI-X sometimes).

These are the newest adaptors and allow for faster data transfer rates. Essentially, as long as it has that adaptor, the sky is the limit. Generally, the larger the number, the faster the card, but pay attention to the clock speed (listed in MHz) and the amount of memory (listed in MB)
